KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Stop trying to be original and start making something meaningful.

  • Classic story arcs are classic for a reason; use them!

  • Mine your memories for inspiration.

  • The clearer you are on your fundamental plot, the better storyteller you’ll be.

  • Creativity = accountability + constraints + skills. You need all three to avoid decision fatigue, make something worthwhile, and ship it.

  • You don’t have to know the end of a story to start writing it; characters speak to you as you spend time with them.

  • Don’t overpromise, just consistently deliver.

SUMMARY

Have you ever racked your brain for a new, original idea, only to come up empty? In this episode, Jake, Sam, and Lee talk about what makes a good idea (spoiler: it’s not uniqueness). The most compelling art isn’t something that’s never been done before; it’s a meaningful reframe of a tried and true story.

What does this mean? Think about the most iconic stories we know. If you strip them back—take away names and places and look only at the basic plots—you’ll see simple and relatable patterns everywhere. For example, at its most fundamental level, Star Wars is about a son who doesn’t want to enter the “family business.” There are a million ways you could dress up that narrative; George Lucas chose a galaxy far, far away, but it could just as easily be about midwestern American farmers, politicians, or mafia bosses. The plot has been done many times, but the application sets it apart.

Rather than trying to force new, genius ideas, recreate old ones. Mine your life experiences for stories and use them to add color to these time-honored patterns. The better you understand the core of your story, the more compelling your tale-weaving will be.
