Sketch Smart!
Shortcut Your Way to Killer Illustrations

With Lee White

Workshop starts October 25th!

Drawing Isn’t the Problem—Design Is.

You’ve got the ideas, the characters, and the enthusiasm—but your images still feel... off. Sound familiar?
Most illustrators jump straight into the details without a solid foundation—and end up stuck, overworking weak designs that never quite click. Without structure, it's easy to get lost.
This workshop is your shortcut to smarter and faster image-making by focusing on DESIGN. And it's also a lot of FUN!
We’ll show you how to kick off your illustrations with bold shapes, strong ideas, and confident choices—so you're not just drawing, you're actually moving your image forward in a meaningful way. You’ll learn how to simplify without losing impact, make compositions that pop, and fix design flops before they slow you down.
Whether you’re drawing quirky characters, dreamy worlds, or wild ideas, this class is your ticket to better and more professional work. The best part is - you can start using these tricks and techniques immediately!

Start Simple. Design Smart. Finish Strong.

Master the Basics – Use Design to break down any scene or character into easy to manipulate pieces. Stop struggling with things that don’t move your image forward
Design Like You Mean It – Learn clear tools to craft strong, intentional compositions. Get rid of the bad ideas without spending too much time noodling something that won’t work
Use Reference the Right Way – Yes, you need reference, even if you are working in a very stylized way. But the key is making it your own. Stop copying and start designing with it.
Get Creative with Limits – Use constraints to spark better technique and ideas
Speed Up with Structure – Build images step-by-step from simple to complex
Make Confident Choices – Know what’s working (and what’s not) before you waste time detailing

Perfect For:

Illustrators who get stuck mid-drawing
Artists overwhelmed by too many choices
Sketchers who want to level up their design thinking
Anyone tired of reworking the same drawing 50 times
Beginner or experienced—if you want stronger, faster, smarter images, this class is for you.

What OUR Students Say

I went into this course with a very basic understanding of how a children's book is designed. Now I feel like a pro! I understand how pages are put together, when to focus on each part of the process, how to control the speed and flow of the story, how to design pages, how "rough" a dummy should be and what it should look like when it's ready to submit. I feel so much more confident in my ability to do this thing that I've been dreaming about for so long! Watch out publishing world, because I'm coming at you! Thanks guys for all the value you've packed into this course.

This is my second focused course with the SVS team and really, I just can't say enough great things about them. Talk about a distillation of knowledge and talent and years of experience broken down into bite size pieces. This is one of the best online teaching teams I've encountered and I've been doing online schooling for many years.  Great course and will get you there if you are serious about self-publishing.

Akua A

I really enjoyed and got a lot out of this class. As someone with a background in visual art, who came to SVS mostly to brush up on skills and learn some advanced techniques, I was a bit skeptical about how useful this would be. However, I found the breakdowns, demos, and technical advice to be extremely helpful and relevant! Definitely recommend this course for creatives at all experience levels.

Maggie M

I had big hopes for this course, and it delivered. The lighting demos were invaluable and the assignments were a great extension for applying the concepts. For me this was the "Aha!" moment that I have been waiting for.

Erin C

This course really changed the way I think of light and shadow, I had seen countless books/tutorials explaining "how to shade a ball," but Lee White was the only one who really talked about how to use lighting practically with big scenes, or how to apply lighting to the style you want to make. It was so helpful and really helped me overcome my fear of making more complicated drawings.

Liz T

I very much loved this course, David's structured approach and ease to explain a complex topic in a very congruent and elegant way helped me accomplish things I did not know I was capable of in my drawings and, best of all, I understand exactly why that is now. Thank you!
