In this episode, Jake, Lee, and Anthony discuss several recent headlines pertaining to the art and illustration community.
They debate whether or not the Gemini Storybook app poses a threat to children’s book illustrators, ultimately feeling that while there is a customer base for the product, it won’t satisfy true children’s book enthusiasts. People who want a cheap way to make a personalized story or who are content to let their children spend all day on an iPad may appreciate the app, but those who love the physical nature and artistry of books and the act of connecting with their kids through reading will continue to prefer human-made work.
Jake shares the story of a massive, recently rediscovered mural by illustrator N. C. Wyeth, originally commissioned by a bank, and they discuss the cultural shifts that have led to a drop in valuing art in public spaces. They also talk about the Wyeth family artists and their differences in aesthetics and perspectives.
Finally, they review a book illustrated to help detect color blindness in children and reflect on the vast potential of children’s books to positively impact the world.
