KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Make connections with both peers and seasoned professionals. There are so many people you can learn from if you put in the effort to get to know them.
  • A successful art career consists of two parts: a well-honed craft and personal relationships. Develop both.
  • Have you visited your city’s independent bookstores? They are community hubs for anyone interested in art, books, and small businesses.
  • Focus on what matters: creating work that resonates with your audience. Awards may or may not follow, but authenticity will always find an audience.
BIO

Jason Chin is a Caldecott-winning illustrator and author. As a child, Jason lived in the same small New Hampshire town as illustrator Trina Schart Hyman and was inspired by her when she visited his elementary school. In high school, he contacted Trina, who became his mentor and prepared him for a career in the arts.

Jason studied illustration at Syracuse University. After graduating, he got a job at Books of Wonder, an independent bookstore in New York City. There, he met high-caliber illustrators, as well as many up-and-coming authors and illustrators. After meeting with a big-name editor through one of these connections, Jason realized he wasn’t clear about what he wanted to do with his art. He decided from then on to create art he cared about, not just pieces to complete a portfolio. Since then, he has authored and illustrated numerous books combining his passions for art, nature, and science.

In this interview, Jason details the story behind receiving the 2022 Caldecott Medal, how it’s affected his career, and what he’s focusing on when he’s illustrating (hint: it’s not awards).

Jason lives with his family in Vermont. You can keep up with his work at jasonchin.net.
